He’d spent three months hiring, and still had nobody in the role

When David took over as GM of a mid-sized construction company, he inherited an operations manager vacancy that had been open for four months. The previous owner had tried to fill it himself: written the ad, posted it on Seek, interviewed a few people. None of them worked out.

A man in a white dress shirt and black tie sits on a dark couch, putting on his tie. He is also wearing pink and white striped socks, with his legs crossed. There are crumpled tissues, a closed laptop, a smartphone, and some notebooks on the wooden table in front of him. The background includes a dark-paneled wall and a potted plant.

“I’d already spent maybe 60 hours on this,” David told us. “Reading CVs, doing interviews, checking references. And I still didn’t have anyone. Meanwhile, I was doing the job myself on top of everything else.”

The problem wasn’t a lack of applicants. It was that the job ad attracted the wrong people, the screening process wasn’t filtering effectively, and the interviews weren’t structured to reveal whether candidates could actually do the job.

We started over. Rewrote the job description to be specific about what the role actually required. Built a screening process that filtered for the right experience and skills. Structured the interviews around real scenarios the person would face in the job. Checked references properly, asking the questions that actually matter.

Six weeks later, David had his operations manager. She’s still there two years on.

“The fee was less than what I’d already wasted in my own time,” David said. “And I got someone who could actually do the job. Should have called you first.”

Bad hires are expensive

Research from Robert Half shows that 98% of New Zealand hiring managers have made a hire that didn’t meet expectations. Nearly 70% take two weeks to six months to realise they’ve hired the wrong person.

By then, the damage is done.

The direct costs are significant: advertising, screening, interviewing, onboarding, training. When a hire doesn’t work out, you pay those costs twice. Or three times. Studies suggest the true cost of a bad hire can reach two to three times the person’s annual salary.

The indirect costs are often worse: increased stress on your existing team (46% of employers report this), increased workload for colleagues who have to pick up the slack (43%), missed opportunities while the role sits unfilled or underperforms.

And that’s before you factor in the potential employment relations issues if the person needs to be performance managed or exited.

Getting recruitment right isn’t just about filling a vacancy. It’s about protecting your business from the cascading costs of getting it wrong.

How we work

For employers:

We start by understanding your business, the role, and what you’re really looking for. Sometimes that means challenging your initial brief, because what you think you need and what you actually need aren’t always the same thing.

We then build a recruitment process that’s proportionate to the role. A senior leadership hire needs a different approach than a team member replacement. We scale our involvement to what makes sense.

Throughout the process, we keep you informed and in control. You make the decisions; we provide the information and expertise to make good ones.

For individuals:

We start with a conversation about where you are, where you want to be, and what’s getting in the way. Then we work together to build the documents and skills you need to get there.

We’re direct about what’s working and what isn’t. If your CV has problems, we’ll tell you. If your interview technique needs work, we’ll say so. Honest feedback is more useful than reassurance.
